Wildlife in an Urban Jungle - Singapore
In the six years that Anne lived in Singapore (2011-2016), she took every opportunity to venture beyond the city’s bustling urban neighbourhoods, into the last remaining pockets of primary and secondary rainforest on the island. These vestiges of forest serve as key rainfall catchment areas for the island and thus, an important source of Singapore’s water supply. They also provide refuge to nearly 400 recorded species of birds (including migratory birds), over 100 reptilian species and 50+ mammalian species.
On several occasions, Anne didn’t even have to leave the comfort of her home in the East Coast area, to photograph the feathered wonders that visited the vicinity. This initially came as a surprise to her as Singapore does not have the reputation of being a nature haven. But with each passing week, Anne learnt not to be fooled by the city’s glitzy urban appearance. With 4 nature reserves and over 300 parks, Singapore is teeming with wildlife, if one knows where to look.
This is a small sub-set of the wildlife Anne has photographed in Singapore.
